CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG JR! And other children's theatre must-sees this festive season
Looking for some child-friendly things to do in Joburg these holidays? Look no further than the People’s Theatre production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jr for affordable and guilt-free family entertainment.
Join eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts and his children, Jeremy and Jemima, on a magical adventure! When restoring an old race car from a scrap heap, the trio discover that the car has magical properties, including the ability to float and take flight. The evil Baron Bomburst gets wind of the magical car and wants it all for himself, prompting the family to enlist the help of the beautiful Truly Scrumptious and their batty Grandpa Potts. Together, the troup outwit the dastardly Baron, his Baroness and their villainous henchman, the Child Catcher.
The People’s Theatre stage production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jr is based on the beloved film version of Ian Fleming’s popular children’s book. It features an unforgettable score by the Sherman Brothers (think Mary Poppins!) filled with unforgettable songs like the Academy Award-nominated song, ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’.
“This is a feel good, heart-warming family musical which is an absolute delight to direct, as it takes the audience back to their childhood while enchanting the next generation,” says director Jill Girard.
Located at the Joburg Theatre Complex in Braamfontein, The People’s Theatre is the perfect place for your child’s first theatre experience. The actors (young and old) are trained to keep performing through any sort of disruption, so parents needn’t feel bad about unruly toddlers and other wildly uncooperative young people. Take advantage of the theatre’s eats and drinks concession, but also feel free to bring along your kids’ choice of snacks and beverages. The People’s Theatre is a laid-back and welcome treat for parents on the lookout for some relaxed, guilt-free entertainment.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jr will be running until 22 December, 2019 and is the perfect day out for that awkward time between the close of school and Christmas. The show runs Monday to Friday with performances at at 9am and 11am, while on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays showtimes are 10:30am and 2.30pm.
